In some Native cultures Spider is revered as a creator, credited with creating humans and guiding them to the surface of Earth. Many cultures believe Spider Woman (Spider Grandmother) is essential to bringing balance. Spider is a source of inspiration for artistic endeavors, as well as a bestower of knowledge and spiritual guide. Spider reminds us to be self-aware and present, as every moment and experience is weaving what we are to become. The symbol of a spider was often used to bestow protection upon the bearer. 
However, in other cultures Spider can be seen as a trickster. The ancient god, Iktomi, was a spider deity, wise yet often unable to control his lesser nature. In this way, Iktomi teaches us the importance of balance and knowledge gained from our follies.
